Michele Newton creator of Our Mosaic Liv

Michèle Newton is a renowned communicator turned speaker, advocate and educational consultant, driving inclusion and belonging. Building inclusion from a bi-racial perspective, Michèle’s bold, forward-thinking approach provides clients and audiences with a new lens on inclusion and diversity. Spreading inspiration far beyond her local community, Michèle remains a social entrepreneur passionate about empowering equitable leadership and fostering dynamic conversations through her various social enterprises.

I’m guided by what I like to call my “better together” philosophy - growing relationships, nurturing collaborations and facilitating partnerships, especially those with a shared focus on strengthening our community. With the Black Lives Matter movement and heightened awareness of system racism impacting all sectors, ensuring communicators develop and hone the effectiveness of their cross-cultural communications couldn’t be more important. The intersection of my municipal and corporate communications background with my community-based diversity and inclusion work enables me to provide unique insights and leading expertise to my clients.

A Public Relations and Corporate Communications graduate of Ryerson University, I also hold a Master of Business Administration degree, specializing in Project Management from Athabasca University. I’ve had the opportunity to provide communications expertise in varied industry sectors including municipal government, post-secondary education, financial services, real estate, beauty services, packaged goods, arts, entertainment and not-for-profit.

Published in the Journal of Professional Communication, January 2021, my passion for facilitating partnerships and collaborations for the greater social good is a recognized earned media strategy. Applying my philosophy across many different brands and organizations over the years, thoughtful and compelling storytelling is consistently at the heart of it all. My publicity approach has regularly garnered media interviews and coverage from CTV News Channel, CTV Barrie, CTV-2, CBC, Torstar/Metroland, Corus, ROGERS tv and numerous other broadcast and print media outlets.

As a community changemaker, I created Our Mosaic Lives™  - a passion project exploring diversity and inclusion, launched Community Conversations – a live D&I interview series, and co-founded Making Change - a non-profit organization focused on awareness, education and exposure to Black people, Black culture and anti-Black racism; and I contribute monthly to Simcoe.com with a Diversity and Inclusion column. I'm also a Black Community Support Council member with Simcoe Muskoka Family Connexions and on the Board of the Barrie Community Foundation. In 2020, I was recognized as one of 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women. and a Peace Champion by the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka.

What is my #btr2gthr philosophy?

It's the belief that diverse communities and people, and for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, are better together (#btr2gthr).

Strategizing creative ways to grow relationships, nurture collaborations and facilitate equitable partnerships with a shared focus on strengthening our community and solving social problems is a key focus.
